Echo of the Lake

The night was warm. The wind that always seemed to past the lake made its way through the branches of an old oak. As always, Kalais was sitting near the Terakis lake, watching in awe as the moonlight was falling upon the water.
A year had past since Kalais left this place. He was bound to it, his roots had spread their weeds and therefore, made him into the prisoner he was. But, it wasn’t a curse for him. He had an important mission, for the lake seemed silent but deep beneath the surface lay a creature who fed upon the fears of Terakisians. He would draw them with his voice, then spread his talons as his fangs feast upon their souls. Kalais had never seen the eerie creature nor had he heard him move. But, he still knew that the legend was more than an old tale, more than the truth that came with the wind as it whispered into his ears.
Kalais shifted his weight. The scent that hit him seemed to come from the tear-shaped lake. He moved closer, gripping the weapon in his hands even tighter. Kalais gazed upon the lake. If you looked closely, you could see the night sky mirror onto the surface of the water, just near the figure that seemed to hover above the lake.
Kalais instantly rose from the ground, backing away from the monstrous silhouette, just so he could look into an empty space. Shock mixed with disappointment filled Kalais’s lungs. He started to cough as his body fell to the ground. Once again, he looked in the reflection of the water, looked at the creature with opsidian eyes. But now, the reflection was missing Kalais.
The wind, once again sang to him, mixed with deception. There never had been a Kalais. The monster rose from the ground one last time. A noise broke from the forest. Visitors, though the creature, beginning singing his lullaby of death.
